Julio Urías to start at least twice more this month

Milwaukee Brewers vs Los Angeles Dodgers

By Jon Weisman

As we noted four days ago, it seemed premature to pull the plug on Julio Urías after his Wednesday start against the Nationals, when his innings count for 2016 would still be at about 70 or less.

Sure enough, Dave Roberts volunteered today that Urías would take the mound again next week, during the Dodgers’ road trip to Pittsburgh and Milwaukee.

While the Dodgers are constantly evaluating Urías with a heightened sensitivity to protecting his arm, they are liking the progress he has shown in each of his first five appearances.

Roberts said the Dodgers haven’t finalized their starting rotation for the four-game series at Pittsburgh that begins Friday, after a travel day Thursday. The soonest they need to add a fifth starter back into the rotation is June 28 at Milwaukee, though they could drop one in sooner.

Brandon McCarthy is aiming to throw four innings for Triple-A Oklahoma City on Wednesday, and Hyun-Jin Ryu is expected to pitch five innings for Oklahoma City on Thursday, followed the next two days by Brock Stewart and Jose De Leon. Frankie Montas is on the seven-day Triple-A disabled list with an irritation related to his rib surgery.

Like this move. I know the inning limit is around 100, but unless they are stressful, no reason that can’t be pushed up to say 120.
