Dodgers late for supper in Colorado

By Jon Weisman

A two-run double by Justin Turner in the eighth inning and a solo homer by Yasmani Grandal in the ninth couldn’t undo the damage of 19 Colorado baserunners in a 7-3 Dodger loss to the Rockies.

Brandon McCarthy walked a career-high five in 3 1/3 innings that were interrupted by a 38-minute first-inning rain delay.

“Never felt like that on a mound before,” McCarthy said, according to Ken Gurnick of “Coming back, there’s a lot of ups and downs, but when the feeling was off, I was able to get through it. Tonight, just the opposite. There were just some horrific, bad pitches in there. I just felt very weird.”

McCarthy said during his recovery from Tommy John surgery, he was warned that there would be days like this.

“I feel terrible,” he said. “You think you’re doing everything right and have to get it right. Today, more pitches just went haywire. Usually you miss and know what to do to fix it, and tonight, whatever you try to fix wasn’t there. I’ve talked to lot of people and you just lose the feel and don’t know where the ball is.”

A three-run sixth inning against J.P. Howell and newcomer Jesse Chavez gave Colorado a 7-0 lead and all but the game out of reach, Coors Field craziness aside. The Dodgers walked eight, matching their most since walking nine in a 12-10 win in Denver on April 24.

Grandal’s homer was his 16th of the season — tying his career-high — second right-handed and ninth since July 1. Turner (2 for 4) has 45 RBI in his past 44 starts.

Josh Reddick went 0 for 4 but made a diving catch in his Dodger debut in right field.

Too bad, had an opportunity to get within a game of the Giants and 3 1/2 up on the Marlins. But tonight’s another night.
