Video: Orel Hershiser meets Carl Reiner

Carl Reiner doesn’t throw 94, but he is 94 — and he’s a legend. So even though he had to cancel his plans to throw the ceremonial first pitch Wednesday at Dodger Stadium, it was still great to see another legend, Orel Hershiser, meet him at his home for some pitching tips and a conversation about their careers.

Reiner wrote more than 50 episodes of his creation, “The Dick Van Dyke Show,” and directed such movies as “The Jerk,” “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid” and “All of Me.”

We’ve established that Yasiel Puig likes video games. Recently, Puig involved himself in another PlayStation initiative and in doing so is raising money for charity.

Owners of the PlayStation 4 can purchase digital items through their gaming console on an app called “PlayStation HEROES.” They will be entered in a sweepstakes, and one winner will eventually be able to play a video game against Puig.

Sony Computer Entertainment America will donate money from purchases to Make-A-Wish, the USO and The V Foundation for Cancer Research.

Puig, Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry, snowboarder Shawn White and recording artist Snoop Dogg are all part of the effort and will go one-on-one with a randomly selected gamer. They have also been turned into cartoon form to promote the effort (as seen in the photo above).

The deadline for entry to play against Puig is Saturday.

Puig PS 2By Cary Osborne

On the morning of July 25, Yasiel Puig visited Sony PlayStation headquarters in San Mateo and took a tour of the campus. The Dodgers were in San Francisco that day to play the Giants, and San Mateo is about 20 miles from the ballpark.

The people at PlayStation remembered when they recently made an important choice. It’s Puig’s affection for baseball and gaming that helped land him on the cover of the video game giant’s franchise baseball game “MLB 15 The Show.” The game will be released March 31 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and on the handheld PlayStation Vita.

“The choices are endless. There are plenty of players throughout the league that you could say are worthy of being on the cover of the game. But I think this year we wanted to do a couple of things,” said Mike Webster, director of product marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America. “We wanted to focus on someone whose passion for gaming is only superseded by their passion for baseball. Where gaming is organically part of what’s important to them. In that way, they can more organically speak to the brand and the game.”

Jaime Jarrin and Cantinflas

Hall of Famer with Mexican Comedic Legend Mario Moreno - Cantiflas (1950s)

By Yvonne Carrasco

On Thursday, while the Dodgers enjoyed their off day, the official Twitter account of the Dodgers’ public relations staff, @DodgersPR, published a photo of Hall of Fame broadcaster Jaime Jarrín and legendary Mexican comic and actor Mario Moreno, made famous as Cantinflas. A biopic on Cantinflas is limited release beginning today. out in theatres soon.

The photo caught the eye of Spanish-language newspaper Hoy, and editor Eduard Cauich reached Jarrín on Thursday for some background. The story will run Monday in Hoy.

For fans interested in the background, here is what Cauich found out and what was told in the aforementioned Hoy note:

This photo dates back to 1961, on a day when Cantinflas was recognized by the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors. Jarrín is interviewing him and at the time was 25.

“Back then I was news director at KWKW, and Mario Moreno was being honored,” said Jarrin.”I was a very thin man. I started to gain weight in my 40s. There, I’m about 130 pounds.

“I first met Cantinflas through his family doctor, Dr. Rodriguez, who was also doctor to Julio Iglesias (renowned Spanish singer, father to pop star Enrique Iglesias). He invited me to a couple of functions in his home where Cantinflas was present. Cantinflas was a very kind person, and we became good friends.

“One day I invited him into the (Dodgers’ Spanish radio) booth, and on that day Fernando Valenzuela was playing. I asked him to do the a little of the play-by-play when Valenzuela was batting and he did.”

Slime Time: The Kids’ Choice Sports Awards

By Josh Tucker

Honestly, the ESPYS are so yesterday. Tonight is the first ever Kids’ Choice Sports Awards on Nickelodeon! On June 27th, the Dodgers hosted Haunted Hathaways star Breanna Yde during batting practice, and things got wild. Breanna learned how to split and spit sunflower seeds from Clayton Kershaw, got Adrian Gonzalez to dance, put mascara on Yasiel Puig, big-leagued Kenley Jansen, and at the end…we won’t ruin it for you. Watch:

Yasiel Puig has been nominated for “Favorite Newcomer” and “Favorite Catch” while Clayton Kershaw is up for “Biggest Cannon.”

No baseball players were nominated in the “King of Swag” category, which is terribly disappointing. You can see the complete list of nominees here, and at the time this post was published, voting was still open.

Michael Jackson, Bad

By Josh Tucker

To ensure we don’t get stale over the course of a 162 game season, we often like to spice and mix things up. Vines, GIFs, photos, videos and all that jazz (hands). In social media school, they taught us to be relevant, or something like that.

In St. Louis, we converse with Nelly. We are never short of Will Smith references in Miami or Pirate allusions in Pittsburgh. When ‘N Sync reunited last year, you bet we were ready. Most recently, we instigated an MLB Taylor Swift themed sing-a-long (sorry).

Tonight, on the 5th anniversary of Michael Jackson’s passing, things got really Bad. … (more…)
