What good are baseball prospects if they don’t move?

The Dodgers came into 2016 with the top farm system in baseball across the board, according to MLB.com, Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus. They had five prospects in MLB.com’s preseason Top 100 Prospects list. And all five moved.

No. 1 overall prospect Corey Seager will, in all likelihood, be the National League Rookie of the Year. MLB.com No. 4 prospect Julio Uriás graduated from the Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers as a teenager and showed rapid progress in the Majors with Los Angeles. No. 24 prospect Jose De León knocked on the door so hard that the Dodgers answered in September, calling him up and watching him contribute to wins right away. In addition, the Dodgers moved No. 62 Grant Holmes and No. 95 Frankie Montas to Oakland in the deal for Rich Hill and Josh Reddick.

In all, seven Dodger minor-leaguers made their Major League debut this year. Many others raised their game, climbed the ladder and gave the Dodger farm good reason to be highly regarded next year as well.

With three picks before the second round of Thursday’s 2016 MLB draft, the Dodgers are sitting pretty.

And on top of that, their top pick from 2015, Walker Buehler — who had Tommy John surgery in August before appearing in a professional game — is on course to make this year’s haul even stronger.

“Walker Buehler’s going to be ready to throw next year — he’s almost like a pick this year,” Gasparino said. “We feel good about his recovery, his rehab and where he’s at in the process.”

Dodger minor league report No. 21: Leonardo’s masterpiece and more

By Cary Osborne

With the minor league regular season wrapped up, we’re going to split the Minor League Report in two parts this week — one for teams that are alive in the postseason and one for teams whose seasons have concluded. We begin today with the latter.

We’ll catch up with the playoff-engrossed Triple-A Oklahoma City Dodgers (who caught a rough break in a 2-1, five-inning loss Wednesday), High-A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes and Low-A Great Lakes Loons (who also lost by one run in their playoff opener) on Friday.

Onto the teams who have called it a wrap …

Dodger minor league report No. 14: What’s the deal with Futures Game pitcher Juan Gonzalez?

Even for the curious, it might have been easy to pay little attention to Futures Game selection and Dodger minor leaguer Juan Gonzalez during All-Star Week.

First of all, it wasn’t the brand name of Seager or Urias or the up-and-comers like De Leon and Holmes representing the Dodgers. And the fact that Gonzalez is a 25-years-old reliever in his ninth minor league season might have made it easy to overlook him.

But Gonzalez keeps doing things this season that can’t be disregarded. Between Double-A Tulsa, where he began the season, and Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he currently is stationed, the Venezuelan right-hander has allowed three earned runs and 19 hits in 33 2/3 innings (0.80 ERA).

Consider this: On May 12, he allowed two earned runs in an appearance in which he didn’t get an out. So his ERA minus that game is 0.27.

Since June 12, (13 games/13 1/3 innings), he hasn’t given up a run. Of the 19 hits he has surrendered this season, two have been for extra bases, and he hasn’t given up a home run. Right-handers are hitting .123/.149/.169 against him this season.

Gonzalez began his pro career in 2007 as a 17-year-old in the Rockies organization. He was a starter until 2013 and has been used exclusively as a reliever since signing with the Dodger organization in 2014.

Between 2007 and 2013, a span in which 83 percent of his appearances were as a starter, he had a 5.00 ERA. Since 2013, his ERA is 2.82.

He’s got our attention.

So do these guys:
